Preparing for a demolition? Use our demolition preparation checklist.

Step 1: Electricity Abolishment

To cancel your electricity service ahead of demolition, you’ll need to request an abolishment, not a disconnection, from your energy provider.

How to apply:

  • Contact your electricity provider and request an abolishment.
  • Provide them with your vacate date and your National Meter Identifier (NMI), which you can find on your electricity bill.
  • Once your application is processed, they will confirm the cancellation date.

Step 2: Gas Abolishment

Like electricity, gas services must also be abolished before demolition, if your property is connected.

How to apply:

  • Contact your gas provider and request an abolishment of the service.
  • Provide them with the vacate date for your property.
  • As with electricity, your gas provider will issue confirmation once the service is cancelled.

Step 3: NBN Abolishment

If your property is connected to the NBN, it must also be abolished before demolition can take place.

How to apply:

Why abolishment of services before demolition matters for your timeline

Providers need time to process an abolishment request and confirm a cancellation date, so it’s worth starting this process as soon as your demolition date is confirmed rather than leaving it until the last minute. Demolition can’t safely proceed while live services are still connected.

How long does abolishment take?

Timeframes depend on the provider and the work needed at your property. Electricity, gas and NBN requests are handled separately, so do not assume they will all be completed on the same day.

Start arranging each service early and ask for the expected completion date when you apply. Keep any reference numbers and written confirmations so you can follow up if needed. If a provider’s timeframe extends beyond your planned demolition date, let us know as soon as possible so we can discuss the schedule.

Who do I call?

For electricity and gas, start with the provider shown on your bill. Explain that the house is being demolished and that you need the service abolished, rather than simply closing your account or switching the supply off.

For NBN equipment removal, apply directly through nbn’s removal and relocation page. You also need to contact your phone and internet provider to cancel your plan. Cancelling the plan and arranging equipment removal are separate tasks.

Arranging these services is the property owner’s responsibility. If you are unsure what to ask for, tell the provider clearly that the property is being prepared for demolition.

What happens if services are not abolished?

Outstanding service abolishments can delay the start of demolition. An empty house, a closed account or a switched-off meter does not confirm that the physical service has been made safe for demolition.

Before your scheduled start, check that each required abolishment has been completed and keep the confirmation available. If you have only received an appointment date, or you are unsure whether the work is finished, follow up with the provider and update our team.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an abolishment and a disconnection?

An abolishment permanently removes the service connection to the property, which is what's required before demolition. A disconnection typically just pauses the service and can be reconnected later. Make sure you specifically request an abolishment, not just a disconnection, from each provider.

What information do I need to give my electricity provider?

Your vacate date and your National Meter Identifier (NMI), which you'll find on your electricity bill. Your provider will confirm the cancellation date once the application is processed.

Do I need to abolish gas as well as electricity?

Yes, if your property is connected to gas, it needs to be abolished before demolition, the same as electricity. Contact your gas provider, give them your vacate date, and they'll confirm once the service is cancelled.

How do I cancel my NBN connection before demolition?

Complete the online abolishment form on the NBN Co website, and make sure you mention that the property is being demolished.

When should I start arranging abolishment of services?

As early as possible once you have a confirmed demolition date. Providers need time to process the request and confirm a cancellation date before demolition work can begin, so leaving it late can hold up your project.
